Finding the Alabama Death Index

There are several ways to find the Alabama Death Index.   Try one of the following:

1.  Visit www.ancestry.com and select search then when the page comes use the scroll bar to pull the page down until you see the list of state and  click Alabama  in the list or on the map.  Now look at the middle portion of the screen and you will see Alabama birth marr and death. Choose the  listing named Alabama death 1908-1959. If you can not see that choice then click on the words "view all 16 Alabama Birth, Marriage, & Death Records "  then click on Alabama death 1908-1959.  And now you will be at the index.  Type in a name and click enter. Now when the names shows up they only allow subscribers to view the full index entry but you will be able to see the year and the name and the county.  Now don't get fooled! It says certificate  but it means the certificate number not the certificate itself.   If you write down the name exactly and the county and the year for the ones that you want to order then I will be able to look them up in the index and get the rest of the numbers that I need. Remember to click on the words "View Record" to get the roll number and volume number and page number if you are using a computer with a subscription.
This is a paid site. You could subscribe to their site but most large public libraries  have a free subscription to ancestry or ancestry plus that patrons are allowed to use. * see footnote at bottom of this page
If you click on this link you will go right into the index.  However remember that you will not be able to view the whole entry of the index.

2. Buy the index CD from Ancestry.  Alabama Vital Records: Deaths 1908-1959.  It costs about $30.      Their phone number is  1-800-262-3787    * see footnote at bottom of this page

3. Or you can send me an email listing the names that you would like me to look up in the index for you. It should be the name used at the time of death. If it was a female then it should be her first name and her last married name. If you know the year or possible county please include that. If not that is ok. The index will let me search by just the name also

notice that is sus not suz and that is an underscore between my first and last name.

I will email you a list of possibilities from the Alabama Death Index within the next 24 hours.
Here are a few things about the list that I will email you back.
A. There is no charge for this list.
B. This will be a list of possible name matches from the Alabama Death Index. Names are often misspelled in the index. Keep that in mind as you look through the list.
C. Note that tombstones are wrong 25% of the time. Note that the county listed is the death county and  reflects where the death actually took place, not where they lived or were buried.
D. If you would like photo copies of any of these death certificates
then they are $3 each. Mail to me your money order and a stamped
self addressed return envelope and the ones you want marked from
this email or  you can print and fill in the form from my web site.
Or write them on a paper.
E. Some of these names do not have the certificate
number beside them. Don't worry about it. I will fill the number in later if you order
that one. They just copy and paste this way.

Happy Hunting!
Susette

*Footnote: There are differences between the indexes on line and the CD index and the microfilm index.  The CD index does not include Armstrong at all, Williams is spelled Willia, Adams is spelled Ada. All these have been corrected on the on line index. But the CD index allows you to search with several wild card searches at the same time. The online index allows you to search with only one wild card search at a time. For more about searching these indexes click here
